Indianapolis Motor Speedway Tile Fountain by Rookwood Pottery 1909

In the earliest days of automobile manufacturing, the American center was Indianapolis, Indiana. Seeking to further interest in the “horseless carriage”, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was built in 1909. Nicknamed “the Brickyard”, the racetrack gained popularity, and attendance year after year. The logo for the Speedway was a winged wheel. Rookwood Pottery company made this fantastic drinking fountain for the Speedway, utilizing the logo in cast stone, glazed in subtle colors. The fountain was removed at a later re-model, and luckily salvaged. The field tiles are a rich blue, surrounded by a cream border. Although the fountain basin was removed intact, some of the field tiles were broken in the removal process. We have had it re-assembled and repaired. This is truly a piece of American automotive and racing history, and a rare opportunity to obtain a unique treasure.
