Harkness Ballet Tutu Shipping Trunk Coffee Table c. 1960’s NYC
The Harkness Ballet (1964-1975) was a NY ballet company founded by Rebekah Harkness, who inherited her husband’s Standard Oil fortune and was a patron of the dance. The company had it’s debut performance in Cannes 1965 and the company mostly toured in Europe for the first 2 years, with it’s New York debut in 1967.
Here we have a Tutu shipping trunk marked Harkness Ballet, New York U.S.A., repurposed as a coffee table with a plate glass top.
This is a wonderful piece of American ballet history.
