Carved Lucite Bust – Arthur Fleischmann
Arthur Fleischmann was born in 1896 in what is now Slovakia. He travelled the world in the 1930s as a young artist, settling in Australia in 1939. He developed his style of sculpture there and created major commissions. He returned to Europe in 1948, and settled in England. He continued sculpting, and expanded his palette to include Perspex, commonly known as Lucite in America. His works were often massive forms, of solid blocks weighing as much as a half ton. He is well represented in museums in both England and Australia, and has a permanent museum devoted to his works in Bratislava, Slovakia.
Our sculpture is a more reasonable size, and sits on a lighted base of painted wood. The work depicts a lovely female with flowing hair, which wraps around three sides of the clear block. The work is skillfully carved, and signed on the lower reverse side. The size of the actual block is 6.75 inches tall, 6 inches wide, and 4.5 deep. The dimensions on the lighted base are listed below.
