Karl Hagenauer took over the family business of creating decorative sculptures & objects, Werkstatte Hagenauer Wien, in 1927. Studying with Josef Hoffman as a young man, he became one of the most influential designers of the Art Deco Period. His pieces found great success in America through the New York City Gallery of Rena Rosenthal.
This Elephant is unusual in that it is held by a chained tether. It may have represented a Circus Elephant.
